Race Report - Red Bud

450 CLASS
The Lucas Oil AMA National Championship made its annual Independence Day
trip to Buchanan, Michigan, and the world famous Red Bud Track and
Trail for the sixth round of the summer series. Since the initial gate
drop at Hangtown, there have been a select group of riders who have been
in the mix each week and today was no different. The Monster Energy Pro
Circuit domination of the Lites class continued with Blake Baggett’s
first place finishes in both motos, while his teammate Dean Wilson’s
second place finish allowed him to hold the point lead for another week.
TwoTwo Motorsports’ owner/lone rider Chad Reed again finished on top of
the podium over Ryan Villopoto and defending champion Ryan Dungey.
While we cannot replicate the shrill blasts of air horns and countless
“Red Buuuddd” chants, we can give you a recap of the day’s events.
Moto 1
Davi Millsaps lifted his Muscle Milk Toyota Yamaha’s front wheel over
the holeshot stripe over the Monster Energy Kawasaki of Jake Wiemer in
the first 450 moto of the day, the key to him leading TwoTwo
Motorsports’ Chad Reed and Rockstar Makita Suzuki rider Ryan Dungey for
the majority of the first moto. In the last third of the race, small
bobbles by Millsaps would allow both Reed and Dungey to get past him for
first and second place and then build a sizable detachment of fifty-two
seconds over the 18 bike

Moto 2
Monster Energy Kawasaki’s Ryan Villopoto had an extremely difficult
first moto, after a crash had him scored in dead last on the first lap,
running the duration of the event visor-less, and then losing his
silencer in the waning minutes. The second moto was quite the opposite,
as the newly crowned Supercross champion took both the holeshot and the
early lead over Ryan Dungey. Dungey was never able to close the already
expansive lead Villopoto had created, and his frustration was evident
both during the race and on the podium. Red Bull KTM’s 450 entry of Mike
Alessi kept the first moto winner of Chad Reed at bay for nearly
fourteen minutes before Reed would make the move and take the third
position and the overall for the day.

Moto 1
When the forty small bore bikes came stampeding around the first turn,
it was Justin Barcia just edging out his Geico Honda teammate of Wil
Hahn for the holeshot. Barcia would set the pace for the opening laps
before a fall would hand the lead over to DNA Shred Stix rider Ryan
Sipes. With Sipes alone out front, all eyes were on the second place
battle taking place between Blake Baggett and Dean Wilson. The two had
destroyed the lead that the Yamaha rider had established while still
fighting tooth and nail for a multitude of laps, with Baggett getting by
both Wilson and Sipes in short order to commandeer the top spot just
after the midway point of the moto.

Moto 2
Blake Baggett picked up where he left off in the first moto, as he made
his way around Wil Hahn on the first lap and once again tore off with a
massive lead. Dean Wilson found himself in second place behind his
teammate, and while it looked like another close race was bound to
happen, the opportunity to pass never came. Seventeen second behind
Wilson was another Mitch Payton managed rider, as Tyla Rattray’s third
place result was able to give Pro Circuit yet another podium sweep. Ryan
Sipes’ chances of a podium finish were dashed when he was collected in
an opening lap crash, but still managed to claw his way back up to
fourteenth place.
